April 13, 2006 Governor Riley Signs Bill to Outlaw Hog-Dog Fights MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley on Thursday signed into law legislation that outlaws staged fights where trained dogs attack penned wild hogs. The bloody battles, known as “hog-dog fighting” or “hog-dog rodeos,” have recently been outlawed in Louisiana and Mississippi. The fights have been documented in 10 states. “There’s certainly no reason to let this animal cruelty continue,” said Governor Riley. “I want to thank the bill’s sponsors, Representative Thomas Jackson and Senator Pat Lindsey, for introducing this bill and working to get it passed.” The bill takes effect on July 1. Similar bills to ban the fights were also introduced this year in the legislatures of Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina. | |
