Ruben Studdard Day, 2003 WHEREAS, Ruben Studdard was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama and attended Huffman High School and Alabama A&M University; and WHEREAS, out of 70,000 people who auditioned, he was chosen to be a contestant on the second season of the popular Fox Network television show, American Idol; and WHEREAS, on numerous episodes his talents have won him praise from the show’s judges, pop singer Paula Abdul and music producer Randy Jackson; and WHEREAS, even Simon Cowell, an American Idol judge known for his blunt criticism and caustic remarks, has paid tribute to Studdard’s talents and referred to him most recently as “exactly what this competition is all about;” and WHEREAS, his consistently excellent performances on American Idol have won the hearts of millions of viewers across the nation and earned him a spot as one of ten finalists contending for a recording contract; and WHEREAS, Studdard has expressed his love for the State of Alabama time and time again both on the show and in numerous print and electronic media interviews; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Alabama appreciate all he has done to promote our great state and will have him in their hearts and minds as he performs in the finals and competes for the ultimate title of American Idol: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of the State of Alabama, in order to remind him that the citizens of Alabama have great pride in his accomplishments and will be cheering him on as he performs, do hereby proclaim the day that he competes in the American Idol finals, March 11, 2003, as Ruben Studdard Day in the State of Alabama.
