Skin Cancer Awareness Month, 2005 WHEREAS, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and is typically caused by external environmental factors such as over-exposure to UV rays and is largely preventable; and
WHEREAS, skin cancer incidence is on the rise, affecting more than 1 million Americans annually; and WHEREAS, the Cancer Crusaders Organization, a non-profit cancer-health education facility, is the proud home of the national Skin Awareness ribbon symbol; and WHEREAS, the Cancer Crusaders Organization has launched a five year international campaign called “Only Skin Deep?” to implement effective skin cancer prevention education curriculum and hence, empower people to combat this disease; and WHEREAS, the Cancer Crusaders Organization has reached an estimated 118,000,000 individuals throughout the United States in less than a year since officially launching the “Only Skin Deep?” campaign; and WHEREAS, the Cancer Crusaders Organization has been recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology as the “2005 Gold Triangle Award” nominee for excellence in dermatological education and health promotion; and WHEREAS, the Cancer Crusaders Organization aims to partner with others who share a passion for cancer prevention and urge the cancer community to adopt and universally incorporate use of the new national Skin Cancer Awareness symbol, which features an orange ribbon encompassing a sunburst, so as to espouse hope: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of the State of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 2005, as Skin Cancer Awareness Month in the State of Alabama.
